Mr. Keener training is grounded in classical ballet with emphasis in Vaganova and

Cecchetti methodology. As a professional, he has performed a very eclectic repertoire

throughout his career from traditional classical ballets including Swan Lake,

The Sleeping Beauty, Romeo and Juliet, La Sylphide, andThe Nutcracker to name a few.

He has performed in works by Sir Frederick Ashton, Sir Kenneth MacMillan, John Taras,

Hans van Manen, Loyce Houlton, Domy Reiter-Soffer,and by other classical and

contemporary choreographers of note. His company credits include Festival Ballet of

New York, The Maryland Ballet, Ballet Met, American Festival Ballet, and several

short-term situations as a guest artist-in- residence.
He enjoys working with other professionals who are dedicated to their organization

and a common goal. Mr. Keener has held full and part time positions with prestigious

organizations including the most recent affiliation with the Alabama School of Fine Arts,

where he was the Chair of the Dance Department.  

He was Director of Dance at the Virginia School of the Arts for 16 years. During that time,
the school gained a national and international reputation for excellence in dance training
and the promotion of young professionals into companies and higher education. There
is a long and impressive list of VSA alumnae who have been or are currently working

professionals with American Ballet Theatre, Joffrey Ballet, Boston Ballet, The
Washington Ballet, Houston Ballet, Cincinnati Ballet, Alonso King’s Lines Ballet, River
North Chicago Dance Company, Sacramento Ballet, Milwaukee Ballet, Nashville Ballet,
Nevada Ballet Theatre, Orlando Ballet and several other professional dance
organizations. Universities and Conservatories include Julliard, Ailey-Fordham, Butler
University, Boston Conservatory, NYU, University of Utah, and more. VSA graduates
have traditionally enjoyed a very high placement rate immediately upon graduating .
In 1994 Mr. Keener became associated with an international summer dance program

(stage) in Northern Italy known as Alba Dance International. Through this association,

many students enjoyed an unusual and culturally rich dance experience while continuing

their dance training during the month of July. Along with that, he have promoted other

dance organizations to join this network including Ballets de San Juan who were

presented in regional theatres under the sponsorship of Alba Dance International.
He had the privilege of creating a contemporary production of Romeo and Juliet for

Ballet Clasico Nacional Republica Dominicana which premiered at the Teatro Nacional

Santo Domingo, September 2007. That production was not only well received by

audiences and dance critics, but also received the honor of a Casandra Award for Best

Classical and/or Contemporary Production 2007. This was also the first such Award for

Ballet Classico Nacional Republica Dominicana in two decades.
Mr. Keener is an ABT Certified Teacher, who has successfully completed the

ABT® Teacher Training Intensive in Pre-Primary through Level Seven and Partnering

of the ABT® National Training Curriculum. He is on the ABT NTC National Artistic Board

of Examiners. He has completed the RPM Teacher Training Course under the direction

of Ruth C. Petrinovic.
